Discover Lakefront Homes, Local Events & the Best of Lakeside Living
Before it became one of the most recognizable destinations in the Pocono Mountains, Lake Wallenpaupack was simply a long valley of farmland, forest, and winding creeks. The Wallenpaupack Creek flowed through the landscape, supporting rural communities long before vacation homes and marinas appeared along its shoreline.\
That changed in the 1920s, when the Pennsylvania Power & Light Company proposed a large hydroelectric project. Construction of the dam began in 1924, and by 1926 the valley had been flooded—creating what is now one of the largest man-made lakes in Pennsylvania, stretching more than 17 miles. The original goal was power generation, but the lake quickly became something more: a recreational hub that helped shape the modern Pocono region.
Today, Lake Wallenpaupack and nearby towns like Hawley, Paupack, and Greentown offer a lifestyle that feels equal parts relaxed and energized. Set in northeastern Pennsylvania’s rolling hills and forests, the area attracts both full-time residents and weekend visitors who come for boating, hiking, fishing, skiing, and year-round outdoor adventure.
Off the water, the region shines just as much. Downtown Hawley and surrounding communities feature artisan boutiques, cozy cafés, farm-to-table restaurants, craft breweries, and a steady calendar of festivals and local events. It’s the kind of place where small-town charm meets modern amenities—making Lake Wallenpaupack not just a vacation spot, but a place many people are proud to call home.
